Is there any big disadvantage to using some of the free domain names. I like co.cc as not to different to co.uk. I thought it would be the popularity of the site and the search engine rank that would be the most important for people finding it?

I just want to say geo-location is a major ranking factor in all of the major search engines. This is why the results are different when you use a country-specific incarnation of Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. even if you do not request a country-specific search. The guiding principle here is the assumption that sites that are physically closer to the user will contain more relevant results.

I agree. Extensions doesn't matter in SEO. If you have real unique and good contents then you will be at top in SERP

Free domain name is absolutely not a good idea. After you have promoted the website, the domain will be valued $2000 even $20,000 next few years.

Could you please explain why as you don't give a very clear reason. Everybody else says it shouldn't matter its the content of the site that is important so why is the .com .co.uk so important to making the site popular. I'm not selling anything, it's not a big business, it's a personal site that I would like to use to share information on songwriting, recording playing guitar and tips...

When you have built up the website, you will promote the websites, and tell your friends about your website ( domain name).

If you get a free domain, domain name is not yours. Maybe 5 years later, your domain value $2000 USD, and this domain is others.

If you want to register a blog website, it is OK for you to register a guitar.blogspot.com, but it is mostly used for SEO purposes not for a business.

Our websites have several thousands of domains registered, some people even register hundreds of domains ( mostly .com, ) just for holding purpose.

Thanks I understand. My plan would be to see if I can get to a point where my website is popular then register a .co.uk domain and redirect traffic from my .co.cc until the new domain has become recognisable. Just don't see point in paying for it if my site is really a hobby but i understand what you mean thanks.

You may get a free domain with thehosting plan if you like. Some hosts and even domain registrars such as sibername.com, for example, offer free domain names with some of the hsting plans theyu offer.

I found some of the names were a bit obscure. The host I use wasn't great so I choose the co.cc because it wasn't to far from co.uk.

Try for paid domain although that’s a cheap domain name, if you want to create profit site or real site.
