I would say that the .com domain names are still "king", but it doesn't really impact SEO that much. The new domain extensions they have come out with, such as .ninja, may not be as popular with users. That's why I would stick with .com.

If you are only targeting a certain country in terms of demographics, it's best to use the country code domain name extensions as it will get a boost in Google SEO for that country. Thats a great point, all extensions are equal in the eyes of the search engines. However if you are targeting a particular country then the CC (Country Code) domains will give a bit of a boost since the search engines take location into consideration.
