How to grab an expired domain name?

Hi. I was wondering how to get names right after they expire. Do I have to be put on a watch list to keep track of domain names that are coming back onto the market? Also if people back order them would I know it ahead of time? Thanks.

If you dont backorder, Keep an eye on whois and as soon as it expires, register it manually. But, if you backorder then its pretty much not needed to keep eye regularly.

The first misconception you need to re-learn is "right after they expire". From the stated expiration date in a whois it will be 70-85 days before the name can be registered. The only time it is less is when someone "releases" the name at expiration.

This is due to redemption peroids and pending delete status plus the actual time for it to drop.

IMO, the best thing to do when you want to grab one is just back-order it somewhere and never check on it again. The more you check, the more attention you call to it and the less chance you have to get it. Believe it or not these things are monitored.

This is great. Thanks for the information. I didn't have a clue on what to do. And I didn't know that backorders were monitored.
