Use common names for websites like coffee.au or food.ca, then you will be ranked high in the search engines and also get direct traffic if someone types it.

The other advantage is that you can sell it for a huge price, realestate.com got sold for a huge 11 million $, the guy who brought the domain for few hundred $ became millionaire overnight.

Also, if your business is for any particular location then go according to the location for registering a domain name, for example .co.uk for UK business, .co.in for India etc..

Lets be realistic about this. For starters, if you haven't registered a generic/keyworded domain many years ago, chances that you find one available for registration now are close to zero. And the business of buying/selling domain names is no walk in the park too. I am also participating in several domain names forums and there are far too many people that jumped head-first into buying many "cool" domains only to find they have no market for selling them. So if this is your only purpose, I would reconsider my strategy and have a solid business plan before starting. You not only need a good idea for a domain, but also an idea who you are going to target for the sale.

Now, if you need to get a domain to serve as your company name, this is something entirely different. The trend for getting keyword-related domain names is somewhat old now and everyone is going for brandable domain names (like Google, , Twitter). Such domains, although not directly relevant with your business, are short, catchy and really build the whole outlook of your company.

At the end of the day its up to you, just avoid rush decisions and you should be alright.
