You can find a economical hosting provider for your requirements instead of a free host. If you go in for a free host, they might have the stipulation to advertize on your website, which is not the case with a paid host. Plus the support plays a ***** role, you will definately get good support if you opt for a paid host.

Guess it depends on which free hosting company you are with. If your free hosting company has a paid version, then it's in their best interest to take care of the free hosting customers so they will want to upgrade. If you find a free hosting company that could care less about the free hosting customers, then you don't want to upgrade. My theory is that a company should take care of all their customers, free or paid.
