  • What do you want in a free host?

Hello everyone. I am developing IsMyWebsite as a partnership with EvenHosting and am trying to get some input. Firstly some ideas I have:

Your account starts as a Noob account. After 3 weeks of activity and a good site built up, you are advanced to a Basic account. From there you can advance to an Advanced account, and finally a lucky few should make it to a Pro account. At every stage your site will be reviewed by experienced volunteers. Using this approach, I can give more system resources to those deserving of it, and help weed out the less deserving sites.

My second idea was to allow individuals to have almost full control over the placement and colouring of their ads. I realize this has a lot of potential for abuse, so anyone deliberately hiding or inappropriately displaying ads will be shut down the moment it is noticed without warning.

    Other features I was planning:
    • Sub domain(yoursite.ismywebsite.com)
    • PHP support(limited in Noob account)
    • HTML editor
    • File Upload
    • FTP(for Basic, Advanced, and Pro accounts)
    • Auto-forwarder Email Address(yoursite@ismywebsite.com)
    • MySQL support
    • Noob 10MB storage space, Basic 100 MB, Advanced 1000 MB, Pro 10000 MB
    • Noob 100 MB monthly transfer, Basic 1 GB, Advanced 10 GB, 100 GB Pro
    • Forum for webmasters
    • Link Exchange Program
    • Custom Error Page(after Noob)
    • Statistical Analysis

Is there anything I should add? Any thoughts?

Thanks. I think Cpanel is already going to be in the plan. I'm just finding out some details about associated security risks. I'll let you know.

Update: A mailing list has been added at http://www.ismywebsite.com/ for anyone interested in being notified on launch date.

Cpanel is in the plan. I'm not sure about Fantastico though. I googled it and all I can find are hosts offering it, with no clue what it is or how to get it. So what does it do and what are any security risks associated with it?

            yes, agree!
but it will be great, that you can get a free sms number to your account (like in our country, 44% of payment going to you and 66% are going to host), i dont know is there such servers, but in Lithuania you can find some

Re: What do you want in a free host?

Firstly I have two questions :-
Q.1 : Is this Noob, Basic, Advanced, Pro etc., always free?
Q.2 : Will you place ads on users websites?
I always like free webhosts, especially the ones that provide subdomains. No offence, but something like www.somefreehost.com/websites/123/user.html that sort is just crappy.
Also, do you get unlimited e-mail addresses? And can I have like faq@mysite.com, support@mysite.com, instead of faq_mysite@ismywebsite?

KypuTe_TpaBy: I'm not sure how that would work but I did think of something like that to encourage sites to place their ads better. If you can give me more details of how to do this I can consider it.

sb225: I am still getting lots more suggestions on other forums.

postguy: I am curious did you even read my original post?
Q1) All accounts are free. You need to advance from Noob to get Basic and from Basic to get Advanced and from Advanced to get Pro. Or you can send a site plan and get Basic right away.
Q2) Ads are required to be on the sites, but they get placed and set up by the webmasters.
You get http://yourname.ismywebsite.com not some huge long domain that makes no sense. You do not get a top level domain, and therefore cannot get emails by that name. However you get yoursite@ismywebsite.com as an auto-forwarder.

_KiLoZhuZ_: Yes. CPanel is in the plan. I've checked and Evenhosting supports it.

Actually your users should be able to have email@thiersite.ismywebsite.com it works that way on another host that I am registered at.

Oh I didn't know I could do that. If I can get it working it will be a great feature but I'm sure some will sill like theirsite@ismywebsite.com as well so I'll offer both. Thanks for the great suggestion.

                            I like forums (I check 2-3 daily).
I guess with all the suggestions from the members you will have a nice free host that I would like to check out.
