Ok this was written by me, and not copy & pasted.

SMF - Has a lot of templates and mods. to choose from, but the mods. usually only work with the default template, so you have to manually modify the other ones to make it work.

PHPBB - a lot of templates and mods. probably more than SMF or any other script (besides VB and IPB) but it has a history for not being safe, exploits etc.

MyBB - Some features match up to VB, has RSS, and some nice mods (called plugins), easy to install as well. It also has a built in portal. As for templates, a decent selection, and if you can make templates for other scripts, you should be able to do so for this one as well.

OvBB - Not many templates, or mods. But it's lite and can get the job done.

My favourite out of those is MyBB, I've used all those free scripts and find MyBB to be the most professional

if you tell me to rate from this forums then I would definately choose PhpBB. As it is tons of mods and templates/themes. So it is possible to customize it very easily.

punBB is neat and clean forum script for small to medium sized boards. I've only used phpbb and smf, but in my next project i'll give punBB a try

Then There are Only 2 Forums script which is best.
SMF,PHPBB .SMF HAVING SOME COOL SKINS Etc.
AND PHPBB HAVE MANY TYPES OF MODS,

My favorite is phpBB because on the mods and templates, but I do like vb.
phpBB 3 is looking good

I love SMF, but I do agree that it's a little frustrating that the mods and add ons don't work with anything but the default template. I've stuck with the default template on my site because of that very reason.
