Both bluetooth and infrared technologies are used for the wireless connectivity. The main difference between them is of range. Bluetooth work with larger range than infrared technologies.
Infrared devices are for one-to-one connections while Bluetooth devices can form connectivity with number of bluetooth devices at a time.

Bluetooth and infrared technologies both provide connectivity between two gadgets. Infrared is like Connecting remote control to your television, while bluetooth is like making a wireless network with a router but smaller and only to your phone.

Infrared: Infrared technology is what most TV remotes use. The distance an infrared signal can travel varies based on the strength of the remote, but is usually less than 50 feet for household electronics. Most infrared devices only work with proprietary equipment.
