I prefer nikon, and always have. when i first started out i bought a canon and it had problems, so i went ahead with nikon and never looked back.

For me, the durability and build quality is an extreme necessity. in blazing hot deserts, and wind-chilled environments of the arctics.. you need it, so I go with Nikon. this is just ONE of the things you look at when buying a camera, to some people it's more important than other things.

Honestly, people who say Nikon are just "Nikon-people" - they are loyal because Nikon had great, maybe even the best cameras 10, 20 years ago. They still have great cameras but their technologies haven't developed as much as for Canon and other newer brands. With the "awkward to hold" issue, I would suggest going to a shop where you can just hold it in your hand and seeing if this applies to you, because it may not. Technical features like the flash are, in my opinion, more important than how you hold a camera, because they can't be changed. You can always buy a grip of some kind. Also, the Nikon entry-level range are said not to be as good as the Canon. They focus more on the professional ones. So even though Nikon cameras are good, I reckon a Canon will be better for the entry-level, and if there are merely physical difficulties (rather than technical), they can normally be overcome. Just buy a case/grip/battery holder thing for the bottom of the camera.
