One of my wisdom teeth has started causing pain and swelling in the back of my mouth, and I’m not sure if it needs to be removed right away.

I went through the exact same thing last year, and while I tried to wait it out, my dentist explained that early swelling can quickly turn into a much more painful infection, so it's really best to get it looked at now before it becomes a true emergency.

I really appreciate your concern for others based on what you went through, as I remember that same internal debate of wanting to wait and see, only to realize that dental pain has a way of escalating at the most inconvenient times. It’s so helpful to have that reminder that a quick checkup now can prevent a much more traumatic and expensive emergency procedure down the road.
