Agreed, I think you don't need any backlinks if you have such a great and interesting content. It will be spread by people who has ever seen it.

They both seem to be very important indeed, actually complementing each other. Just take a look at status of top ranking websites on Google and other top search engines and you will find the portals being powered by high quality content pages and at the same time accompanied by lots of links, originated from sources which are authority spots.

Readers of contents and net audience would be liking the sites and blogs which are filled with informative materials, naturally if the same spots are powered by enough links, their ranks on search engines too will get improved after a while. It is recommended to keep building links for sites and adding fresh contents to them on a constant basis.

I think content is more important than links these days. Google is giving more priority to content than links which is seen by Google Panda Update.
