One thing you can do is to build your backlinks at a slow and even pace. At least this is the advice from many experts to help avoid the sandbox. The typical thought is that it looks unnatural if a site gets 3000 backlinks in one day and then nothing for a month. My question is what about when something goes viral? A news story or something posted on your site may cause it to get a massive amount of links for a day or two until the news is stale. So, why don't these kind of things sandbox a site (or maybe they do?)? Is Google really smart enough to determine a situation such as this?
