Yes you are right that its not necessary thing to do if you have some good backlinks from major sites then your website get automatic crawled by Google or other search engines. Submitting website into Google Webmaster Tools is the good thing to crawl your website instantly. If you want to get crawled instantly then you should add your website into Google Webmaster Tools with this also try to submit site map.
