  • rel=canonical vs. 301 redirection

It takes longer for Google to find the rel=canonical pages but 301 redirects seem to lose impact over time.

Canonical Tag is used when you have more than one that has the same content or when you have subdomains to your website but the content is the same.
301 redirection is used to redirect the whole domain to the one that you want like if you want to have the www in your domain but not using the redirection then Sometimes Search Engine Crawlers consider both the domain with www or without www a different URL. So, we use the 301 redirections to redirect that to the one.
If your website has no canonical tags then it is better.

Canonical is a value written in ‘rel’ field of the link tag. If search engines come across a web page with canonical tag in it, they understand that it is the duplicate version.A URL is provided in the link tag which points to original version of the content.

301 redirect is a catch phrase often used in SEO where nobody really explains how to do it. 301 redirects are used to permanently move a site to a new location. Search engines do not apply penalties to 301 redirects the way they apply them to many other types of redirects.

Canonical Tag - In SEO, canonical tags are used to avoid possible content duplication problems caused due to publishing a similar content copy in different URLs.

301 Redirect - It is a permanent redirect method by which a person visiting an old page (URL) is automatically redirected to a new page (URL). 301 Redirects transfer the domain authority (DA) and page authority (PA) and all the inbound links that the URL had to the new URL. It is used when you change your domain because you want Google to index the new domain while also sending the traffic visiting the old URL to the new one.

In SEO, Canonical tag is a tag which is used to prevent the issue of duplicate content while 301 redirection is the placement of a website to a new location but permanently.

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

Canonical Tag - The canonical tag is an important tag used in SEO optimization to avoid possible content duplication between two pages published with content similarity. If the same content portion is published with more than 1 URL it may cause content duplication. To avoid the problems of content duplication canonical tags are used.
