Why would anyone bother to pay $5 to add a link at your directory?
Make it free and you will get some links.I mean host dosn't costs more then $20 a month.
Do paid link exchange and add adsense.

Because a link on our directory is worth it. This is not another crappy free directory. It's a heavily customized, heavily promoted, well maintained directory. The goal is not to add a million links - it's to bring real traffic and strong SEO benefits to the few links that pass our submission guidelines and make the investment. When you pay nothing, you usually get nothing.
