1st spot of google's search of paid for?!!

just wondering that whether an average user (i mean an internet user) knows that the 1st spot on google search is usually paid for??!! well i just really hate how the hell they make it so that the number one place/spot when we do a google search for different things we see spots which often are a paid spot, and its hard to tell whether its paid or not

what you people think approximately how many of the average public internet surfers realizes it that when these people click on the first spot than its usually paid ad?

The top spot on google is not paid for, it is reached by doing tons of seo techniques, people put thousands of dollars into links, advertising, traffic, etc. The sponsored listing is done by payments though.

I don't think it can be that easy. Nobody can actually pay for their listing to be at the top spot in search engine ranking and I know google don't condone such act as well in order to protect the integrity of their search engine.
