Any ideas on the Google keyword tool

I want to know something regarding the keyword tool of Google. I have been working for sometimes with the websites now. Till date, I have smartly handled the process of SERP choosing. I have seen a keyword that reports of about 100000 searches and I was indeed very surprised to find this out. Therefore, I am not quite sure regarding the usage of this particular keyword tool. I also do not know whether researching would help me in any ways. I have received many benefits from this tool, but still I often wonder is it very useful? Let me know your ideas.

It is an excellent tool, but when you research, click (on left hand side) on Exact Match only to get realistic volumes. If you just look under the default Broad match, you will get anything that could even remotely relate to your term such as if you keyword is "metallic promotional pens" you will get anything from metallic, to promotional, to pens in any combination. If you use Phrase Match, for the example above you would then get anything with "metallic promotional pen" in it with a word before or after, so say "blue metallic promotional pens" or "metallic promotional pens of tomorrow". With exact match you can get the exact terms and suggestions to (click) closely related terms only as suggestions. You will see how the volumes become significantly reduced.
