Long tail keywords are three/four keywords which are very specific to what you are trying to sell.

For eg, If I search for hosting, you will get plethora of paid ads and lot of players competing for that keyword.
You are unlikely able to compete for this keyword.

You can compete for long tail keywords like "chicago <area> hosting". The more keywords you can add, which is specific to you, is more likely to rank higher.

So, it is a means to get a higher ranking for combination of keywords.
