I saw a lot of members buying other forum members' avatar space for the purpose of advertising. How effective is this?

Re: Avatar Advertising
Hmm... How come other webmasters spend a lot of money in renting other member's avatars?

Re: Avatar Advertising
I think it would be effective if the member is well known, active and posting everywhere in the forum.

Re: Avatar Advertising
if you had a whole heap of people use the avatar I think it could be quite effective as your brand name would be out there in front of everyones face all the time!Mario Mayhem - Mario downloads, games, information, Mario everything!

Re: Avatar Advertising
Another factor, is how good the avatar looks, and if the URL is there. If it just says a word, then it might not be that effective since you don't know if that's the URL and if it's .com .net and so on.
If you have a short URL then it might be more effective for you, than for a site with a longer URL, since theirs will be harder to read.

Re: Avatar Advertising
I don't think it's very effective.
It's not like people can click on it to just go straight to the website like a forum signature or anything.
It would have to be really good to make people want to type the website in, and there isn't much space in an avatar to make it great.

Re: Avatar Advertising
signature is more effective, anyway if you have a nice avatar, probably people will notice thatTRIBALHOST.NET - Realiable and Cheap Shoutcast Hosting

Re: Avatar Advertising
If it is clickable, I think it is effective. If the avatar is animated, this makes more attractive and effective avenue for marketing. Combining your signature and avatar for marketing and promotion purposes makes sense.Just Do It!

Re: Avatar Advertising
Even if the avatar is not clickable it can still be an effective marketing tool. Think about how much money companies like Coke spend on brand awareness. When people see your logo everywhere they will instinctively see your site as a quality site. Even if they can't click on it the avatar is still having a powerful effect.Directory Forums Best General Directory Forum is a community for webmasters and directory owners.

Re: Avatar Advertising
I think it's rather silly. sigs I can understand, but not avatars. at least not in the long run.
it'll also quickly become saturated and confusing. before I used to use avatars at a glance to identify posters... when four people in the same thread have the same one it's just frustrating, doesn't really make me want to head over and check out their service.

Re: Avatar Advertising
It depends on how attractive the avatar is, and if the url is quite visible. But I do think links on the signatures work better, because you can simply click the link to be directed to the page, and you also get to type a slogan or phrases that will get people interested in the link. As for the avatar you only get to put images, and to make matters worse it's a really small space.

Re: Avatar Advertising
I think it is only effective if you buy avatar space of most members of the forum. I mean, if people will see same thing over and over, they will definitely check it out.
