How are the keywords used while SEOing?

From what I have noticed, I can say that keyword plays a very important role. But, how can one determine the number of keywords that can be used while SEOing. The consultants have warned the SEO professionals and website owners not to over burden the web content with keywords. Too many keywords can lead to spamming. Besides, including very less keywords is not advisable. So, how should I use the keywords for my SEO purpose? If there is a limit, then inform me. If I adhere to the standards, will my site get fast and effective results? Please guide me.

-Write very good articles, that people want to link to.
-Keywords in the title, and h1 tag. Sprinkled in natural-ish through the rest of the article.
-Do use synonyms.
-Write very long articles (some people don't agree, but this is what works for me).
-Publish, get backlinks if possible - then forget about it for a while.
