The best thing that a forum offers is the traffic that you can generate from forum posting to your website. This is the only advantage that you get from link building in forums. Apart from that, forums are a place where you share and gain knowledge from active discussions.

On my point of view Forum posting is not even close to the best way of creating links - it may be the easiest, but it is definitely not the best. The best are "contextual" links in the content of a website, blog (post, not comment), or article, and articles should be shared through networking sites, NOT through article submission sites.

It depends on where you are going to link, some article submission are not good in giving results, sometimes they can also be the reason why you can be lost on the Search Engine Results, If you are going to submit articles, go on for the websites that are having good reputation and having a good standing on the search engines. Blogs can also help but be sure that you are updating it regularly, in this way you can ensure that it would help you to get better backlinks.
