Virtual Dedicated Servers ??

I'm little confused about whats a Virtual Dedicated Servers, is there anyone who can explain about this ? Its easy to understand that its not a independent physical server computer but I wonder how it works.

A virtual private/dedicated server is just like a normal server, as you already know. Unlike shared accounts where they just give accounts on the server.. a virtual private server actually gives you slices of all the resources:

eg. The server has 2gb ram. You buy 256mb of that.
The server as a 2000mhz CPU, you get 500mhz
The server has 160gb hard drive, you got 30gb
The server has 1500gb bandwidth, you get 400gb

You can install whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. Nobody except the server admin themselves can access your files. It's technically a dedicated server, but not as powerful.

I guess virtual servers is an excellent alternative to dedicated servers, not quite as powerful but way better than normal hosting.

Apache can also do "virtual" servers.

Useful feature, but few ever use it manually anymore (well, it does have an api that cPanel uses)

Look for "virtualhost" in the apache manual.

It allows Name Based virtual, and IP based virtual.

Virtual Dedicated servers emulate at the SERVER level, Virtual Private just emulate at the webhost level. (i.e. VDS-Virtual PC, Virtuoso...;VPS-Apache VirtualHost, IIS multi a/c feature.)

A VPS is just a virtual private server, your personal private area on the bigger specific server. A VPS allows you complete control over a piece of the host, basically, a pot which has an operating-system and provides you with root use of do with it as you please.
