  • Managed / Unmanaged dedicated servers ?

What is the difference between managed and unmanaged dedicated servers ? Do they each has their own advantages ? and how is the price difference ?

  • #2
Managed servers have ongoing support from a systems administrator who is usually on-site. Their exact role varies depending on who your host is, but you can generally expect services such as hardware and software maintenance, software upgrades, security patching and audits etc. The host is usually responsible for the upkeep, so if there's a fault, yours or otherwise, it is dealt with quickly.

Unmanaged servers are exactly what they say on the tin - You are responsible for the server, so if you want any software installing or upgrading, it's your job. Likewise if you make a hash of it and subsequently require an OS reinstall, for instance, you may be charged a fee.

You obviously pay significantly more for a managed server, but if you have a mission critical site or services then the extra support and peace of mind may well be worth it.

There are lots of comapnies that offering both managed and unmanaged solutions. Look at the http://www.exmasters.com/. They offer both and learn how price depends on the managed and unmanaged.
I think that the must answer your question in the best way.
As for advantages and disadvantages DeepBlue has posted great ones and I'm fully agree with him.

Unmanaged dedicated hosting obviously refers to dedicated servers with less, little or none of the skilled people support you'd expect to find in managed. You signup, you pay, and in a few minutes to a few hours you get a welcome email with IP address, login, FAQ's, etc. - Beyond that you are pretty much on your own. Relax - you are not really as own your own as it seems.

I have always wondered about this as well.So if you have a site where you may need some support, then managed is the best?

managed servers are more expensive, unmanaged need good skills from you as an administrator.

everything depends on your skills of administration the server. High enough to DIY - get unmanaged, not enough - managed server is for you.

Good managed dedicated servers are provided by Ahosting.biz.

Yes, that is right, also unmanaged are cheaper. BTW Ahosting.biz provides both managed and unmanaged dedicated servers. Also I have seen something called "semi-managed servers". Though no Idea of how that works.

Unmanaged servers are good in case you have got enough experience for their running, managed is good if you don't have time to manage them yourself. Say a2hosting.com provides nice managed solutions and they have done it well.

Think you are using exmasters.com services and I'd like to ask you about their bonuses, if you have used any of them. They seem attractive for me and I'd like to know about them from the first hands.

Both managed and un--- servers are attractively presented by glowhost.com - the company with good reputation and fairly reasonable prices. They have wide selection of deals and offer many features and good network and server uptime.

                          Managed or Unmanaged

Its good to have managed dedicated hosting since it will save you time effort.

Unmanaged is for people who have expertise to handle servers or have some one employed to take care of regular work.

                              >A managed dedicated server means that the host will take care of keeping the server up to date and running easily. If it goes down the hosting company will get that back for you.

                              >But in terms of the unmanaged server, it is quite different from that of the managed server. If you are technically savvy with the servers this unmanaged servers is the right choice.
