  • Managed VS Unmanaged Dedicated Server

If you are planning to , you should know the difference between managed and unmanaged servers.

Actually, the Managed Servers are dealt with by the web hosting company. As a user, you will be able to set up the basics, like domains and mailboxes, but the web host company keeps responsibility for all necessary set-ups and maintenance of the server. While exact definitions vary among providers, generally speaking, managed hosting means your provider takes complete or near complete care of your server, which includes anything from basic system maintenance and patches to applications maintenance, security, monitoring, etc.

Unmanaged Servers are cheap, and basically self-managed by the customer. Unlike the before mentioned, you are responsible for configuring and maintaining the server. The data center sets up the hardware, connect it to the internet, assigns the IPs and install the OS and maybe the control panel and the rest is up to you. Your tasks would be to configure the server, install programs, add your firewall and troubleshoot. In such web hosting services, your web hosting service provider will install all the systems that are required except the operations to be handled by you.
The sharp definition of "managed" differentiates from service provider to another. Some will take care of some aspects of your server; some will take care of the system you have. Some will offer you the time you need, others will cut the time they spend in your service.

Contrarily, "Unmanaged" are the same across providers. You give your clients access, and they log in and do everything by their own.
Thus, unmanaged dedicated server will be an option if you have technical competences to manage security and operations of the system. Otherwise, you'd better pick the managed dedicated server choice that will help handle troubles.

If a webmaster experienced enough in managing servers, it will be much cheaper to get unmanaged servers.

In managed dedicated server hosting, all the technical tasks are looked after by the web host’s technical support team. You don’t need to worry about the server management and maintenance or installing updates.

In unmanaged dedicated server hosting, you are the sole owner of the server and are responsible for everything right from server management to updates installation.

You are responsible for making sure your Server is properly set up and operating efficiently. An unmanaged Dedicated hosting is not the best option for you if you are not confident maintaining a server.

Managed Dedicated hosting could be a better choice for you if you are not confident in maintaining your own server or do not have the time or knowledge to do so.
