  • How is VPS hosting different than Shared hosting ?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) eliminates restrictions usually associated with shared hosting by giving you the power and flexibility of a dedicated server with your own set of services and customizable disk space. Shared hosting is limited in comparison to VPS Hosting as its users do not have administrative access and software configurations cannot be customized, despite the fact that physical resources are also multiplexed. With VPS Hosting, you can control your own unique file system and CGI-BIN, disk space, system resources and bandwidth.

Virtual hosting is a method for hosting multiple domain names (with separate handling of each name) on a single server (or pool of servers). This allows one server to share its resources, such as memory and processor cycles, without requiring all services provided to use the same host name. The term virtual hosting is usually used in reference to web servers but the principles carry over to other internet services.

A shared web hosting service or virtual hosting service or derive host refers to a web hosting service where many websites reside on one web server connected to the Internet. Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section/place on the server, to keep it separate from other sites. This is generally the most economical option for hosting, as many people share the overall cost of server maintenance.

Virtual private server is one of the most efficient hosting platform that provides the user with dedicated hosting kind of envoirnment. The investment involved in this hosting platform is also less.

        Re:

I think shared hosting is good for static websites and if you don't have to handle much traffic then it is fine but if your website is big and you need good number of visitors then VPS hosing preferable then shared hosting.

With a VPS you are basicly in control, but in a shared hosting you have limited access and in a vps you can do whatever you want,

VPS is like a Small Dedicated server on which you have a Root access to your VPS server, so you can install any 3rd party application on the server. You also have the freedom to change or modify the ports or any other settings for security reasons. So you can opt for a VPS server if you need to have a Full control over your server. Shared plans only have control panel access to manage the website/account and you can't install any 3rd party application on Shared plans.

A VPS is better compared to a shared hosting. With a VPS you get guaranteed resources and complete access to your server, this on the other hand is not offered on the shared hosting package. A VPS is considered to be a bridge between a shared hosting and a dedicated server as a VPS offers almost all the features that a dedicated server does but at a very low price.

Though it is too late to answer it might help the upcoming vps seekers.. VPS hosting is similar to that of dedicated hosting. VPS hosting provides users with root control access, independent RAM, and other resources that do not affect other virtual servers in that machine.

There are three main reasons behind the preference of this hosting package,

                        1) Provides same privilege of control and security as that of the dedicated hosting solution.
                        2) Low and affordable pricing as that of the shared hosting plan.
                        3) Main server is divided into multiple servers and each server acts as an individual host for individual users.
