apache rewrite rule format

I have dynamic pages that look like this.

/index.php?purl=text_variable_with_underscore_2355. html

What would be the rewrite rule to get them to look like this.

/text_variable_with_underscore_2355.html

There is no other page besides index.php for this site.

Do you know how to enable htaccess and mod_rewrite?

First of all you will have to enable mod_rewrite module by recompiling apache or else you can also download it manually and enable it.

Once you enable it, you just need to write mod_rewrite rules that you wish to use in .htaccess file.

.htaccess file should automatically created when your account is created. However, you can create a new one inside public_html folder if you do not find it.

I don't have good knowledge about URL rewriting, I just know that we use .htaccess file for URL rewriting.
