  • Problem with DNS

I have a problem maybe someone can help me with. I have a site and I use a URL forward for it. When someone goes to domain.com (example), it doesn't resolve, but yet when it goes to www.domain.com, it does. I've checked to make sure there is an A record for the non www domain, but it still doesn't seem to work. This is at domainsite. Is there something I'm missing or a bug in their system?

May I know at which server your domain is hosted ? Is it Windows/Linux? Also, which control panel are you using?

If you are on a vps / dedicated server - i suggest contacting your provider. It may be their firewall, configuration. Give them a shout!

Even I guess this could be a reason. Happens many times, that firewall plays a spoilsport.

@sunken there is a bit confusing part on your post, however I will try to understand it the best I could. You said you have a site and you use URL forward. Would this otherwise means you are redirecting your domain.com to www.domain.com? And yet, you're caught in trouble since after something has done, domain.com won't pull up anything but www.domain.com does?

If my understanding fits exactly your case, here's what you need to do to correctly redirect it. Create a .htaccess file and save in onto the same location where the actual web files for the site is located. Open .htaccess file and have the following codes inserted:

              Options +FollowSymLinks
              RewriteEngine on
              RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
              RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

You only have to replace 'yoursite' in the code above. Save your .htaccess file and try accessing your site again with the naked domain (domain.com). It should redirect to www.domain.com this type (if done correctly)

Anyhow, if my understanding does not fit your case, then please make it a bit more clear for me to provide appropriate answers.

              Hope that helps. Cheers!

Could also be. There's really a need for the OP to clarify from where he is at so we could give proper advices on what to do from where we are and how we see it.

DNS, though, can be your foe as well as your friend. DNS problems may stop you from being able to visit Web sites. If you're having problems connecting, it doesn't take much work to see if DNS is the cause, and if it is, to try to fix it. To find out whether DNS is a potential culprit when you're having trouble connecting to a site, first ping the site to which you can't connect by issuing the ping command at the command prompt, like this:

DNS problems may prevent you from visiting websites. Unfortunately, some firewalls have problems with this accessory as defined in the drop DNS packets over 512 bytes. Demonstrate that the problem is actually a DNS problem. Since you are not, you have no reason to choose to try to solve the problem.

DNS problems may prevent you can visit the Web sites. The inability to open a web page with the name usually indicates a DNS problem. Many times, when you create a new area or to promote a computer that is not properly installed or configured DNS, Active Directory does not take properly configure the DNS namespace for your new domain.

Problem of DNS can also arise due to hosting, which hosting are you using windows or Linux and what control panel do you have?
