A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) is where the attack source is more than one, often thousands of, unique IP addresses. It is analogous to a group of people crowding the entry door or gate to a shop or business, and not letting legitimate parties enter into the shop or business, disrupting normal operations.

Although the means to proceed, the motive, the goal of denial of service attacks may be different, but generally it involves the coordination, the malicious effort of one or more people to a page, Or the network can not use, interrupt, or cause the system to slow down significantly for normal users, by overloading the system resources. Criminals attack denial of service often target typical websites or servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways and even DNS root servers.

I used to check out a website that would get DDOS assaulted quite a bit. Someone did not want the website proprietor to do well with her company so they provided it where her website would always go down. She dedicated to a program to secure it. I did not remember what it was known as, but it was something rather costly.
