Instead of getting a Dedicated Server, why not save your money and turn your one of your computers that you don't use into a server. That way you can save money on dedicated Servers and make money by selling space on the server. Most Dedicated Servers come with rules such as no File Storage. So if you have your own, you can do whatever you want. Who disagrees with me on this and why?

You certainly could turn one of your machines into a server, but are you prepared to manage the box 24/7, keep up with patches and security threats, etc. What do you have in place for backup in case you lose power. The list could go on and on. If it is simply a sandbox machine for testing and development, then go ahead, but if you plan on selling hosting to customers then there is alot more to consider.

The idea is not bad in itself, however it's bandwidth that you may find problematic, especially if you are planning a traffic-intensive site, say for the gaming community.
So, I'd recommend going for a colocation service if you do not feel like getting a dedicated server.
We are offering colocation services starting at $65.00 for 1U in one of the most densely interconnected datacenters - SwitchandData, North Bergen, New Jersey with free setup and first month for free http://www.natcoweb.com/special_offers.html
