  • How should I choose a VPS product?

I'm looking to get into a VPS product to host my customer websites. I've done a lot of looking around at the different VPS packages and companies but don't know how to decide which one is best.

I'm curious how you guys have made your VPS decisions.

    Some more info:
    - looking to move a handful of customer sites initally
    - sites are backended by databases with PHP scripting
    - I am not a savvy server administrator

    Thanks everyone

You know, really important feature of the VPS is the ability to create sandboxes and honeypots. These are methods of testing software updates and features while keeping the main site secure. Your company uses one of its VPS partitions for its main site and another one as a backup.
My experience proves that webintellects.com offers secure and affordable Linux and Windows VPS hosting plans and it has nice reputation in the market. You can contact their support as it is responsive and able to help you to host every web site.

You have to decide between a Windows and a Linux box unless you are doing something like Cloud via Rackspace where you can run both. If your client sites are high traffic then certainly bandwidth is a concern. Each host uses different control panels, so finding one you are comfortable with is something to think about as well.

A low-end managed VPS package looks like your best option, and you have a lot to choose from in this area. It just depends on your budget.

Depending on the customer websites their needs, you might get away with a shared hosting package which would be cheaper. There are plenty of shared hosting offers that let you host several websites with domains pointing to the different folders.

I have a Linux Virtual Private Server. What product would allow me to run an "exchange-like" calendar service on my box?

Pay attention to this. The trick is to keep it simple by looking at the bigger picture.Asking basic questions ,and don't buy if you don't get a satisfactory answer.
                      Some criteria to consider:
1.How long has the VPS provider been in business? Can you count on the provider to be there when you need them, several years down the road?
2.Is the VPS you are considering a mature solution (seasoned OS on proven hardware), or is it a newcomer? When it comes to reliability and stability, experienced providers are the best bet because the technology has been proven.
3.Does the provider use refurbished desktop hardware that may not have the most reliable components or drivers?
4.Are the operating system and hardware tuned for optimal performance?
5.Are hardware/software updates and upgrades included as a part of the service, or will you be expected to pay for upgrades or do the upgrades yourself?
6.Does the provider offer constant patches and security reviews to lock down possible vulnerabilities?
7.Is the provider using certified hardware and applications for security, performance and reliability?
8.Are applications available to install on your VPS that have been certified to run on your VPS, so that you aren¡¯t required to compile and install applications on your own?
9.Does the provider ensure that your VPS is allotted a fair share of server resources, such as CPU, bandwidth, memory?
10.What type of network connectivity can you expect with your provider? Going with the big guys should get you much more reliable network connections and network peering, which ensures better and faster access to your server regardless of what functions it has been set up to serve.
11.Is free support included in your VPS hosting plan? For how long? What type of support is offered¡ªcan you ask ¡°how to¡± questions? Will they help with you questions about using your server, even if your questions aren¡¯t about the server itself?

A VPS should be judged by the comprehensive set of services you receive. ... shared and dedicated hosting services, including Verio's VPS Product LineThere are many reasons that you should choose UltraVPS to be your VPS ... Check to see what the response time to support tickets are. Find out what kind of management is included with the VPS. Search for reviews to see if the provider oversells or not, and to see what the experience of others have been with the company you are considering. Also check to see what kind of uptime they will provide you.

                              Hello,

Virtual private server From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In computing, virtual private servers are a form of virtualization that splits a single physical server into multiple virtual servers. Virtual private servers are sometimes called virtual dedicated servers. The practice of partitioning a single server so that it appeared as multiple servers has long been common practice in mainframe computers, but has seen a resurgence lately with the development of software such as VMware, User-mode Linux and Xen.
