The best VPS is one that suits you best. No matter it be one from a known host or not. Generally the bigger hosts will be good enough, but you won't get the support etc you really want to have.

Support is big when you can get personal help, and not some person who doesn't care about your issue. I personally like the VPS's from medium sized companies, because they don't try to handle 50,000 clients at once, and can devote time to their issues/clients.
