  • Suppose I wanted to start a webhosting business...

I want to start a webhost company in a few years (about 3) - by then I know the market and industry will have changed a lot, but I have a killer idea that (I think) may "sink the industry" - though that's too strong of a phrase to use, maybe more like "be unique"...

Don't try to tell me the stuff you'd say to a n00b like "it's a flooded market" -- this I know and I'm not 11. I'll leave negative rep for comments like this. Sorry for the brutality but I'm sick of being treated like an 11 year old. You know, being 15 is a lot different from being 11. I trust you all here are mature enough to deal with this.

Anyway, I don't want to offer the cheap hosting for like $5 or even $15/mo. I want to start my plans at like $30/mo ... is this a wise plan? Of course, you'd get more for $30/mo than you would at other hosts for $5/mo.

    Let me know,

    -John

Selling your plans for $30 would be difficult. What can you offer that all of the others don't? The problem that you would run into is that there are a bunch of hosts out there offering much more than you would be for only $5. Now, they would have to oversell a lot to achieve that, but you would still have to deal with it. Let's use an example, let's say that your $30 per month plan, comes with 10GB diskspace and 100GB of Data Transfer, how are you going to compete with oversellers who have 600GB of Diskspace and 6,000GB of Data Transfer for only $4.95 a month? While you might not oversell, and you might have better quality, consumers wouldn't make that distiction all the time. So you would have to deal with that.

All I know is. If you tell me to pay you $30 for a month of hosting. I will say "Good one, microsonic offers $2.75 a month " I dont think you would make a dime selling $30 a month hosting.

If you can get through the oversellers and find some good clients you'd make it. It will take some time but you can get through it. Find some people who you know closely and are looking for hosting and set them up.

selling hosting account for $30/mo is like selling hosting to next youtube. I've found some hosting company that provide huge amount of bandwidth and space but still manage to keep the price as low as $5/month..

You gonna struggle if you try to sell hosting for $30/mo unless you've got a lucrative offer for affiliates

I'm not sure but for me I think if you will sell hosting for $30 a month, it would be difficult for you to find a custome. I mean there are so many hosting company this time offering a good service as well as cheap hosting and these companies already have a good reputation. So think it over

It would depend on what kind of hosting. Shared hosting, you would never get people to pay $30. However, for VPS and Dedicated, you can get at least that or more. Course in 3 years as bandwidth prices fall, that will probably be a much harder sell.

$30 for shared hosting? Wow, good luck trying that, but don't you personally feel thats a bit expensive?

You asked is this a wise plan. Well in my opinion it is a wise plan but it will be hard to complete, not much people would pay 30$/mo. Even thought, you should go for that goal and search for at least 25$/mo, thats what I would do

Well You haven't mentioned what kind of hosting you are going to offer for 30$/month. It its shared hosting I don't think it would be successful if its VPS [ virtual private servers ] at the moment its a good price. But remember hosting prices are decreasing with less server costs so by 3 years it will be lot less than now.
