  • When is it overselling

How much is too much when you're trying to not get the oversellers? Is 80gb HD with 5 people on it at $2 a month too much or is it profit?

  • #2
Not exactly sure your question. But, overselling is overselling, period. Different host do different amounts, but it is best if you find one that does not oversell at all. The server will likely be in better shape than one that is overselling.

I agree overselling puts a lot of stress on server's

also its not good if you have reseller account under your belt.

moreover its better to go for the non overselling services.

Overselling is usually when the host is offering "unlimited" features or features that is obviously too good to be true...and all that for the small change in your pants pocket.

You know what they say..."If something's too good to be true, it usually is".

I'd just stay away from the hosts that you think might oversell, and then you'll be good. Hosts that oversell aren't something you want to be a part of, as it can bring a server down for quite a while if theres too much crap on it.

I dont think you can get to a point. But when you are given 100mb by your provider, and your selling 101mb as small as it is. You are overselling.

Don't forget about prices and influence that show the company oversells.

It doesn't matter if you have 120gb HD and are offering 10 accounts at 50mb each, its still overselling. I mean what if some of the clients decided to use all of the space.Bam! There goes your server.

Overselling is really a serious problem. It will put lot of stress on server's.I'm taking services from manashosting.I feel they are not oversellers. They have lot of dedicated servers for different functions.I think we can rely on them.

What is called controlled overselling then? How much of servers' resources are not usually used?
If you pay $25 for 500MB of disk space and 5GB of bandwidth, would you say that the host isn't overselling or the plan is expensive? I'm talking about the particular company at the moment Hostcats.com and their reseller plans http://www.hostcats.com/resellerhosting.php

Overselling can be different from company to company. It is true, most big companies oversell their services, and something like 80G HD for $2 is probably overselling. But on another note, big servers can probably just buy another server right away, causing their service to still run at optimal conditions. Would you still call that overselling?

Some companies like hostcats charges a lot based on the insecurities of the unknowing customer. But then again, the service is located in India. Their services might just very well be more expensive there.

There are three kinds of consumers. One that wants a deal out of everything and gets horrible services, one that wants to pay extra for the best but always gets ripped off, or the smart consumer that buys based on a lot of background knowledge and research.

Overselling means offering more resources than possible to allocate. A common example of this is selling hosting with Unlimited diskspace and Unlimited bandwidth.
