What's the difference between Linux and Windows hosting? Is there any difference in the speed aspect, and stuff?

  • #2
The difference is in prices and software that is used under different systems.

        There are some difference.

Linux users tend to be sometimes fanatic in their support for their favorite operating system. The power of their convictions may be very impressive, but that shouldn't be the only reason to believe they're right.

When Windows doesn't seem to have that many true fans or they're not that vocal.

The basic difference is the technology they use, like anantshri stated above.
I will prefer Linux hosting because i think PHP is more flexible and thus overall flexibility of a Linux server increases

What is the difference between Linux and Windows?

                  LINUX HOSTING:

Linux is an open source system and is therefore more cost-effective to operate and maintain than Windows, meaning that Linux hosting will cost you less than Windows hosting. Linux also has a reputation for stability and speed which means that Linux web servers will crash less often than Windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Windows. Linux supports a wide range of software, applications, languages, and databases such as PHP, Perl, PostGre, MySQL, PostgreSQL and many others making it very scalable. On the downside, Linux is not fully compatible with some Microsoft technologies so if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows would be a better bet.

                  WINDOWS HOSTING:

The main "advantage" or distinction of Windows servers is that they can run Microsoft software such as Access and MS SQL databases. Windows servers also offer web developers the use of Microsoft's programming environments such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic Scripts, MS Index Server.

Users can develop web site using the familiar interface of Microsoft tools such as, Visual Interdev, and Microsoft Access. With ASP users can develop a database-driven web site using Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL as the database.

The Linux users tend to be infatuated sometimes in their support for their favorite operating system. The energy for their convictions in May will be very impressive, but it should not be the only reason to believe they are right.

Windows and Linux both are computer platforms (operating systems). Windows is very secure in terms of privacy and security of data while linux is robust and stable platform. You cant expect Windows to run for years without rebooting while linux can run for several years whiout rebooting.

Windows is more user friendly and they lack a bit in security. One advantage of windows hosting is that they are able to run mircosoft softwares such as Microsoft Access and SQL databases.Though Linux is an open source system it has an extremely good security which windows can't even get close insted using firewall.Basically linux hosting is cost effective but it is not user-friendly as windows and also linux hosting is not compatible with microsoft softwares.

I am currently posting this using Ubuntu Linux. I must say that Linux is much faster than Windows XP. It is also more powerful. However, it is a bit more difficult to learn.
