What does term proxy site mean?

I have seen some topics using this term. I don't know what does it mean. Can anybody explain?

A proxy site is a site, that you can access via to another website. It means that you use the website to pass with the websites server on other site in need of changing your ip or unblocking a site for example at your school or in China (etc.).

proxy sites are mostly used by students or at work because most fun websites like youtube, myspace are blocked at these places so a proxy site gets around these restrictions.

in simple i like to explain.you can access bane website through proxy web site.for example if some site bane in yours school and collage then u can open these sites.

it's simply a site which covers you IP address with it's and at the same time covers the site's ip address which you are visiting with it's ip.
This is done:- you open a proxy and open a site within it, then the site that you are viewing is opened at the server at which proxy is hosted and you are not directly visiting the site so the ip of both the site and client pc does not shown to either.

Proxy server is a kind of server offers a computer network service to permit clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. There are mainly three kinds of proxy server
1) Gateway proxy
2) Reverse proxy
3) Forward proxy
