Unlimited domain hosting - how unlimited?

This is a misleading business tactic used by many web host providers to further their business. I have just written an article about this on my blog. My question is... when would the public realize this "unethical" techniques and rise against the businesses promoting the unlimited packages.

You are right, i read this regularly and also regularly read complaints about this unlimited stuff. It is time somebody acted strongly on this regard.

Well, about the space and bandwidth unlimitations - I think this is really overselling, but unlimited domains are normal practice. The end-user should understand that certain amount of resources would limit the number of domains which work optimally by the speed and performace. Certainly, it is impossible to host more that one normal site at the 10 MB of webspace...

I know webhostgiant.com offers unlimited domains in their multidomain packages, but they offer large specs for everyone. And you - or end user may host there as much sites as you can, with all the responsibility of their work by yourself.

Well since there isn't a hard drive which can store unlimited GB yet, it can't be unlimited. The companies are over selling because they think that their customers won't fill up the space, because a lot of people don't seem to use much space.

Lol i really agree with this , there are not a harddisk or storage that can store unlimited data. They just tell u that to attract customers and make money..

Unlimited domains is a real possibility.

Unlimited space and bandwidth are both gross oveselling and are the true subject of your article.

Another trick used is the limitation of other features like email or databases. Again a bad business.

Unlimited domains are normal practice. But unlimited webspace and bandwidth is really unethical. It is obvious that you cannot hold unlimited sites on the shared account of 10GB - there is certain mount off sites which would work optimally good on those specifications.

If someone doesn't understand this - it is a completely his own problem.

Many reliable hosts offer unlimited domain names e.g. webhostgiant.com on their multidomain plans (25GB of webspace 1000GB of bandwidth), but the responsibility of their proper work is completely on the client.

Ya totally true...they take your site down if you use more then 20% of their resources...it means you make all the effort to make your site popular and when it finally happens your site goes down...

i had using dreamhost before, its not really unlimited, its just they advertisement to get customer as much as they can, then if your websites is small they are happy because you will always pay flat ammount each months, lets say only $10, but if your websites is big they will push you to use vps/dedicated or they will shutdown your account

this methode is using by hostgator, hostmonster, dreamhost, etc that offering unlimited disk space and bandwith, this is just for newbie webmaster or to attract you to use they service first, then push you to they vps/dedicated

I would suggest everyone not to go with hostgator, hostmonster, dreamhost because these hosting providers are over sellers and their scheme is totally fraud.. if your site gets good visitors and start consuming more system resources then they will immediately suspend your accounts and you may also lose your remaining paid amount..

It is good to take VPS instead there many cheap VPS available these days and the good part is that you can use the maximum allocated system specifications..

The unlimited thing is never true practically, suppose you pay your hosting $5 for unlimited disk space and unlimited domains and bandwidth and you host more than 10 websites which are resource intensive then they will immediately suspend your account..

My best suggestion is never ever go for yearly hosting.. You will loose all your money.. many hosting providers show offers in yearly hosting .. it's just their easy earning scheme.. They can simple show you the TOS and suspend and won't even return your unused money..

So never ever go for yearly hosting..

As some said above, dreamhost isn't really unlimited. And there's also a thing I don't like: they say they offer certaing amount of transfer but that isn't true. At first they only offer some of that, and then they increase it after some weeks.

Unlimited hosting doesn't exist because is impossible to have unlimited disk space, just as simple as that.

I agree with everyone here. Once again I think offering unlimited domain names - like it is done by webhostgiant.com and many other companies is normal - for sure you need to understand the physical possibilities of your account to decide how many sites it is possible to host with no losses.

like host monster, ixwebhosting etc
