Something I've recently come across on another forum is someone was using lifetime hosting, but his host decided not to do these anymore and charged him a rediculous fee. I guess that's something to be careful about.

Agreed.. life time discounts are very hard to come by. I know www.T35.com isn't talked about that often here, but '20%OFF' gets you 20% off for life. Check out some of the general coupon sites..they surprisingly list web hosts on there.
