I agree with igxhost and also want to add few more points.
1) Check budget - how much you want to spend?
2) calculate web space required (files size you will upload on server), calculate bandwidth (how much data will be downloaded from your site)
3) Server location
4) Price of web hosting change according to operating system installed on server. (Linux server are cheap compared to windows)
I want to add more points here,
5) Check your requirements (which script you want to run on server do they have installed it or not? Also which database will you use, IPs, reinstalled forums, CMS and a lot of stuff)
6) See company profiles (For how long they are in this business, can they manage server properly?)
7) Read their privacy policy. (How long you need to purchase hosting, upgrades, money refunds related issues etc.)
8) Support is most important (If you are new, you must need a good support from hosting providers, technical issues always arrive, support team must be very helpful to solve our problems)
