Unix is just an older version of Linux. We don't use it at present.

Look for a minimum uptime of 99%. In fact, even 99% is actually too low - it really should be 99.5% or higher.

UNIX is a specification. Unix was an operating system developed by AT&T. Many operating systems were derived from Unix, and are also certified UNIX. But not all systems derived from Unix are UNIX, and not all UNIX certified systems are derived from Unix (Windows or Mac OS X, for instance). Linux is neither derived from Unix nor certified UNIX.

So the difference between UNIX and Linux is that one is a specification, and the other is an operating system kernel. There are many differences between the various UNIX systems, and differences between them and Linux, so it is difficult to be comprehensive here.

The Linux kernel mimics some of the features found in Unix-derived and UNIX systems, but it is neither derived from them nor wholly compatible with them. Again, there are many Unix-derived systems, so it is difficult to be comprehensive. Just remember that Linux is not Unix (or UNIX), does not act the same way as them, and should never be mistaken for one another. They are as different as, say, a horse and a llama.

Alot of replies here are false and misleading.

History, Linux Torvads has a collage project and he decided to clone Minux (a Unix Distribution). He's project turned out well and others liked the idea of having a free and opensource OS, so many others started right utilities to make the Linux Kernel into a full fledge OS. That is a very breif summary and would recommend you to research to get a better understanding.

              Now Linux Vs. Unix.
Most Linux software can run on Unix as well vice versa.

As for performance: Linux has proven that it has the ability to use far less resources than Unix.

Unix was developed by AT&T and sold the sold to a few company's like Sun Micro Systems and HP which they developed it into there own fork of Unix.

As for what is better in the long run, Linux is going to have far more world wide support because it's wide range of support, unix still has the ability to be competitive and still runs on modern main frames today. So no its not oudated, its mostly just not free. there are a few opensource Unix code out there though.

Mac OS X was actually has parts of Unix and Linux code along with custom coding so it was a mix of all 3 and thats why alot of Linux software can easily work for Mac OS
