  • VPN or Dedicated?

One of my sites is growing very quickly. I could see myself having 700-800 concurrent forum visitors in the next 3 months. I am trying to decide if I can get by just upgrading to a robust VPN account, or if I should go for a dedicated box.

Any thoughts? What can a VPN handle for vbulletin?

I currently just switched from a reseller to a dedicated. I rather not deal with a VPN or VPS

Dont hate me for asking, but what are VPN and VPS? These terms are new to me.

Hmm.. I posted a lengthy response to this and now it seems to have disappeared. I wonder what happened to it. Anyways, a VPS is a virtual private server. Think of it as a software based dedicated server. You get some of the benefits of a dedicated server, but you are still sharing the resources of a single computer with other VPS customers.

You are normally guaranteed a certain amount of cpu, memory etc from the machine.

i found my original explanation in my cache:

A VPS is basically a virtual private server. From the management aspect of it, it looks and feels like your own server. However it is actually on the same hardware with other customers who also have their own VPS. You are basically guaranteed a certain amount of memory, and cpu etc, and then the rest is shared as needed in burst.

This is basically a middle ground between being on an all-out shared host and a dedicated server where you have control of the whole thing.

You can usually install and run programs on the VPS, have a pseudo-root access to your part of the machine etc.

Like I said, from a management perspective it feels like your own server, but the resources are shared.

anyways, not sure why the forums ate all my posts from last night.

I would say that if you have the money, and can manage a server you might get better service than the VPS.

Im using ServerBeach but there's a lot out there.

Holy snikeys.. That is the lowest level VPS I have ever seen. Only $10 bucks a month. Only 100 mhz of cpu though, but still for someone wanting to get their feet wet in the VPS ream it might be a nice stepping stone.

yea unless you REALLY need a dedi like are going to constantly use it.. i would say go with a VPS bcus it cost less and if u need to go with a hosting company that will alow u to upgrade to a dedi without like issues happening

Sence your not sure yet I am going to have to agree with Zalaki. If your unsure if your going to need that kinda power you might aswell go with a VPS for a few month and then if you still need a deticated server and can afford one then you might want to upgrade.
