Many different companies offer free web hosting services at no cost. However, a common set back is most of these free web hosting plans do not offer sufficient features you need for your website and/or most of them force you to place advertisements on your website.

Hosting with a reseller is not a bad thing. However, you need to do extensive research - sometimes a reseller is very good all around but inexperienced when it comes to scripts and server environments.
Not clearly defining your requirements

Always keep your own backups, even if your web hosting provider performs backups as well. It happens far too often - a customer's website goes down indefinitely and they couldn't put the website on another web hosting provider because they didn't have any backups of their own.

Check with your web hosting provider what versions they are running and how often they make updates before you purchase web hosting services from them

Agree with you, its always good to create backup periodically. Select only those hosting service provider who does not place ads on your website on free plan selected.

Always create backup! This is the first and most important rule! Even the company provides this feature, you must create it by yourself

yeah. creating won backup is good even your hosting creating backups for you.

Back ups are a must. never run with out a back up. Don't even really rely on the host backing up. Safety first

Most reputable companies backup automatically, but not necessarily off-site. That's an important question to ask. Even so, I always backup myself to ensure that I have what I need to keep moving.

That would really be a total disaster if you don't make back ups, especially when you have lots of important files and data, that is why if you are able to set the auto-Back Up, just do it..

One mistake would be to go with the free hosting. Never do that. Another would be to go with the new born hosting companies. Many business companies barely know how to setup the host or update you whenever you have problems. I would go with a pro company.

I never trust and use free web hosting services for my own business unless I just want to test some free web hosting services or I don't take my websites seriously.

Agree with all the above mentioned four points. They need to be taken care off when you are proud owner of website or in web hosting business. There has been many cases happened related to all which makes your life miserable. Safely first. Free web hosting is just for promotional part so a potential customer can try-out services of webs host and be a customers later after trial duration over.
