      There is no denying the fact that the choice of platform mainly depends on the apps you are planning to host.
      I know that hostdepot.com is a good US web host, time-tested one (since 1997). All of their work is based on quality.
      Uptime is great. They even have scripts to add email forms and guest books and counters that are part of the package.

            I vote for Linux and if you need recommendation you can use 4goodhosting.com. They are reliable web host. Their servers are fast. There are no hidden fees.                   Linux is best unless your website/application demands windows components like ASP.Net or MSSql database, in that case, you have no option but to consider Windows hosting.
