On August 6, 2014, my wife and I terminated our contract with 1and1 Internet AG. We had a small website that was undeveloped and there was no further use for the site. There was some hesitation on the part of 1and1 when I called, but the service rep was courteous and professional; he ended the contract, and refunded the balance to us. We neither initiated nor received any further contact with 1and1 from that date.
Until mid-July of this year, that is. We received what appeared to be a mass mailing format letter from 1and1, announcing that we owed $52.38 past due on an account since June; a customer number for the account was listed, one unknown to us. We had received no prior communication about any such account. The account has now been sent to a collection agency, adding about $20 to the total claimed to be due.
It's clear to us that this is a bogus account and attempt to acquire funds through deceit. The current fame of Wells Fargo bank in the US has made Federal and State regulators concerned about on-going fraudulent corporate activity, and we have no trouble seeing the same business model in the recent efforts of 1and1 and the possibility of the company generating spurious accounts.
Has any here received such letters from 1and1? We are preparing several courses of action.
