LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing. These are keywords that are similar to synonyms and related keywords, but not entirely so. They are the words a normal human would use when talking about the keyword topic.
Google has tuned it's algorithm to look for these in the content to determine if the content is considered "quality" by Google.
Here is an example for the keyword "Creatine" used in body building:
Root Keyword, LSI Keyword,Occurrences,In Results, Word Length
creatine, supplementation, 285, 5, 1creatine, athletes, 32, 4, 1creatine, review, 58, 4, 1creatine, performance, 83, 4, 1creatine, support, 30, 4, 1creatine, sports, 76, 4, 1creatine, term, 26, 5, 1creatine, exercise, 99, 4, 1creatine, used, 35, 5, 1creatine, body, 66, 6, 1
The second word is the LSI Keyword. Notice that "supplementation" is used 285 times and occurs in 5 of the top ten sites for this word in Google. The same applies for the other LSI Keywords.
So if I was going to create some quality content that pleased Google, I would make sure that I included words like supplementation (285), exercise (99), performance (83)sports (76), body (66), etc. Because Google is ranking these sites on the first page, and those are the LSI keywords they include.
Note: These are only the one-word LSI keywords. There are all the other 2, 3, 4, 5 longtail keywords as well.
Just as a matter of interest about 17% of the traffic will be received from the main keyword (in this case "creatine") , the rest of the traffic (83%)will actually come from these other keywords.
Hope this helps.
