How does Shared Hosting work?

I am using a shared hosting plan for my blogs but I don't know where it came from? How does shared hosting work? Does it have 1 IP address for every package hosted?

Anyone explains me?

So If your application is not so resource hungry and performance Intensive you can go for shared hosting plan which is fairly cheap compared with the VPS plans. Shared hosting might have user isolation, but most of the hosts don't have any isolation. Which means a user is allowed to eat 90% of the pie if he is hungry and other users are not. If a webhost uses CloudLinux or alternate solutions to limit resources to each user it brings much more stability to operations but beats the concept of shared hosting.
