Two step authentication or 2FA means that user is verified at two levels. Unlike conventional way where use get access just by proving correct username and password. Here the user is also verified via email or phone. Verification code is sent to the user to his email or phone and only upon providing the code he get access to the system.

Two-factor authentication, also known as 2FA or two-step verification, is an optional feature designed to prevent anyone but you from accessing your hosting account by requiring two forms of identity verification: your password and an authentication code. 2FA is ideal for anyone looking to increase their account security because stealing your password isn't enough for a hacker to access your account. They would also need access to your mobile device or email account, depending on how you set it up.

Two Factor Authentication, also known as 2FA, two-step verification or TFA (as an acronym), is an extra layer of security that is known as "multi-factor authentication" that requires not only a password and username but also something that only, and only, that user has on them.

I agree with this detailed explanation that in 2 step verification user had to enter authorization code at the time of login so that it will increase level of security and login history with IP address can be stored.
