Which is better I would have to say depends on many factors including:

How do you use your website? (a dedicated site but be in order for some large business sites, while VPS or shared hosting will work just fine for others)
What is your hosting budget?
How much traffic do you expect?
How large is your website?

The best choice can vary from person to person and situation to situation.
