  • What is disaster recovery (DRaaS)?

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) is the replication and hosting of physical or virtual servers by a third-party to provide failover in the event of a man-made or natural catastrophe.

DRaaS can be especially useful for small to mid-size businesses that lack the necessary expertise to provision, configure and test an effective disaster recovery plan (DRP). Using DRaaS also means the organization doesn't have to invest in -- and maintain -- their own off-site DR environment. An additional benefit is that DRaaS contracts can be flexible as the business' needs change. The downside, of course, is that the business must trust that the DRaaS service provider can implement the plan in the event of a disaster and meet the defined recovery time and recovery point objectives.

Disaster recovery is a set of policies and procedures which focus on protecting an organisation from any significant effects in case of a negative event, which may include cyber attacks, natural disasters or building or device failures.

Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) is the replication and hosting of physical or virtual servers by a third party to provide failover in the event of a man-made or natural catastrophe.

Typically, DRaaS requirements and expectations are documented in a service-level agreement (SLA) and the third-party vendor provides failover to a cloud computing environment, either through a contractor on a pay-per-use basis. In the event of an actual disaster, an off-site vendor is less likely than the enterprise itself to suffer the direct and immediate effects, which allows the provider to implement the disaster recovery plan even in the event of the worst-case scenario: a total or near-total shutdown of the affected enterprise.

DRaaS is a cloud-based solution that third-party service provides to small and large businesses to ensure protection of data, decrease downtime, and reduce Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) at the time of any issues.

It is offered as a pay-as-you-go model or through contract with payment based on any combination of storage, RAM, compute cost, bandwidth and licensing fees for the backup software, depending on the disaster recovery solution provider.

Service Level Agreements can impact costs and documents the service an organization can expect from the provider.
