This is really very good question. how much work must be done daily for any website. As much I Knows it depends on age of project if you have recently start seo work, then You need to do lot of work.

I bealive the ideea is that a SEOs work never stops. Best results in google organic rankings are obtained when backlink aquire speed is constant over a certain period of time. This is also called link velocity.
Meaning that if you set out to get 100 backlinks for your website, it is best to get 5 links daily for 20 days, instead of getting all 100 in one day. Because your website will jump in front in serps and then, when google sees no more interest in the website(no more links coming) it will slowly but surely take you back one position at a time.

Nice tips here especially on the backlinking and how Google looks at those over time. SEO will boost you but it is time consuming. I personally believe it is worth it. Look into any professional SEO package and it will make you want to perform those daily routine and some times even boring tasks yourself. But, the return will be worth it.

I totally agree with you. Backlink building isn't a one night job. It should be constant and it's better to start slow (5-10 links per day) and accelerate slowly (max 50-100 per day).

Yes suppose SEO is a daily work. You can not just do it for one time and relax for weeks or months. You can not even relax for one day. Just plan it, schedule your work and observe the results. Thats how daily SEO should be done.
