As a developer, you can be expected to be proficient in programming language like Java, .net, PHP or C++. You can choose the other language that excites you keeping in your mind that PHP, Python and Ruby are also very useful in some situations software development. So, am not go for a single programming language as a benficial programming language in general purpose software development.

you have to specify what kind of language you are using.
if you are like c or c++ then turbo c is good
if you like java then netbeans was so good
other for asp.net you can use visual studio and
for php you can use zend or other framwrok which is good to you.
